Roosevelt Elementary School 2011-12 Program Advisor of the Year, Michelle Sirounis, was featured in Florida Today! In her interview, Michelle shared how Fuel Up to Play 60 has been successful at her school and what it means to her to have been chosen as Florida’s Program Advisor of the Year. Cindy Coughlin, a Physical Education teacher at Alice B. Elementary of Springfield, Mass., was named a “Physical Education Champion of Change“ at ceremony in Washington D.C. on March 22nd. Cindy has used her love of the outdoors over 15 years of teaching as inspiration to find creative ways to teach her students about the importance of eating healthy and getting active.
Cindy helped establish an Outdoor Classroom, where she takes students on monthly excursions to explore local parks. Cindy also helped implement a “Safe Route to School” program that ensures Alice B. Elementary students bike or walk to school safely. Cindy learned engaged with Fuel Up to Play 60 not only offered new ideas on how to keep her kids active but also opportunities provide her students will more access to healthy foods. After applying and receiving Fuel Up to Play 60 Funds, Cindy began hosting “Fuel Up Wednesday” where her students have a chance to enjoy healthy snacks such as hummus, apples and low-fat cheeses. With Fuel Up to Play 60 Funds she also purchased commercial blenders so the entire school can make healthy smoothies!
