On September 8, First Lady Michelle Obama and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that the First Lady’s Let’s Move! campaign and NFL PLAY 60 are teaming up to fight childhood obesity during the NFL PLAY 60 Youth Football Festival, part of the NFL’s celebration to kick off the 2010 season. During her remarks, Mrs. Obama mentioned how the NFL is working with partners such as National Dairy Council on Fuel Up to Play 60 to get kids to not only be active but also make healthy eating choices. Commissioner Goodell also spoke during the event and noted Fuel Up to Play 60 as a program that helps kids get their 60 minutes of physical activity every day. A press release posted by the White House also discussed Fuel Up to Play 60 – touching on the partnership with the NFL PLAY 60 program and support from the First Lady’s office.
Additionally, more than 300 kids were invited to visit the Fuel Up to Play 60 booth at the NFL PLAY 60 Youth Football Festival where they fueled up with milk from Brown’s Dairy and string cheese throughout the day and also signed a pledge to fuel up with nutrient-rich foods and get a least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
Earlier in the day, Mrs. Obama visited Brock Elementary School, which is a participating Fuel Up to Play 60 school, to announce the next phase of her Let’s Move! campaign and recognize Brock Elementary as a recipient of the USDA’s HealthierUS Schools Challenge Gold Award of Distinction. The First Lady also discussed that key benchmarks of her campaign were to double the number of children winning the President’s Active Lifestyle Award in addition to participating in the HealthierUS Schools Challenge.
